After losing the rights to use his own brand, W.&L.T., due to a legal dispute with the company Mustang, Walter Van Beirendonck launched the brand “aestheticterrorists by WALTER” in 2000. This brand had a brief lifespan and was discontinued in 2004, likely following criticisms related to the theme of terrorism and the events of 9/11.

The SS02 collection was titled “BODY:XTENSIONXFASHION.” The t-shirt graphics featured photographs of individuals with rare physical conditions, referencing the historical phenomenon of freak shows—popular forms of entertainment in the 19th and early 20th centuries where people with atypical physical characteristics or anomalies were exhibited. This context led to the slogan “Freak? No: unique!”, conveying a message of personal acceptance, which presents the idea that traits usually labeled as flaws may, in fact, serve as defining markers of uniqueness.
